Worth the trip for the music alone

Three cities you go to for the concert.

Some places you visit for the sights. Vienna, Venice and Salzburg you visit for the evening performance: the golden hall, the opera house, the candlelit chamber concert. These are the cities audiences plan a whole trip around.

Austria

Vienna

No city wears its music more openly. Mozart and Strauss play nightly in the Musikverein's Golden Hall, in the mirrored rooms of Schonbrunn, under the dome of the Karlskirche and inside St Stephen's. Players take the stage in period dress and the programmes are the ones the city wrote. If you only chase one sound across a trip, start here.

  1. 1 Vienna: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons Concert in Karlskirche ★ 4.7 14,951 reviews
  2. 2 Vienna: Mozart Concert at the Golden Hall ★ 4.6 3,986 reviews
  3. 3 Vienna: Classical Concert in St. Anne’s Church (Annakirche) ★ 4.6 3,414 reviews

Venice

Venice keeps two great traditions a short walk apart. At La Fenice, one of the world's most beautiful opera houses reopens its gilded boxes night after night. Across the water, ensembles like the Interpreti Veneziani play Vivaldi's Four Seasons by candlelight in the churches it was written for. Few evenings anywhere feel this much of their place.

  1. 1 Venice: La Fenice Opera House Entry Ticket with Audio Guide ★ 4.6 11,742 reviews
  2. 2 Venice: Interpreti Veneziani Concert at Church of San Vidal ★ 4.8 3,256 reviews
  3. 3 Venice: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons Live Classical Music Concert ★ 4.6 2,524 reviews

Salzburg

Mozart's home town plays him beautifully. Candlelit chamber concerts fill the marble Mirabell Palace where the young composer himself performed, and a fortress dinner-concert sends the music out over the rooftops. A compact city where the programmes, the rooms and the history all line up.

  1. 1 Salzburg: Mozart Concert at Mirabell Palace ★ 4.8 3,498 reviews
  2. 2 Salzburg: Best of Mozart Fortress Concert and Dinner ★ 4.5 1,424 reviews
  3. 3 Salzburg: Mozart Concert with Dinner ★ 4.8 835 reviews

If you only book one seat

The concert more audiences rave about than any other.

Out of every performance on the site, this is the one people come home telling everyone they know to book.

Vienna

The city that plays itself every night.

Vienna keeps Mozart and Strauss on stage the way other cities keep the lights on. The Musikverein’s Golden Hall, the mirrored salons of Schonbrunn, a string quartet under the dome of the Karlskirche, players in period dress. Whatever night you arrive, the programme is the one the city is famous for.

Venice

Opera house and candlelight, a bridge apart.

Few cities hold two great traditions this close. At La Fenice, one of the world’s most beautiful opera houses raises the curtain on its gilded boxes night after night. Across a canal or two, ensembles play Vivaldi’s Four Seasons by candlelight in the churches it was written for. Pick the grand night or the intimate one, or both.

Porto

Fado, a glass of port, and the saddest songs you’ll love.

Porto sings its homesickness out loud. In small rooms over the river, a guitarra and a single voice carry Fado the way the city has for generations, usually with a glass of tawny port in your hand. An evening here is the most Portuguese sound there is, and a side of the city a day-tripper never hears.

Mozart’s home town

Mozart, in the rooms he grew up playing.

Salzburg plays its most famous son the way no other city can. Candlelit chamber concerts fill the marble hall of Mirabell Palace, where the boy Mozart himself performed, and a fortress dinner-concert high above the rooftops turns an evening into the whole reason to come. Small city, perfect acoustics, the programmes that belong here.

  1. 1 Salzburg: Mozart Concert at Mirabell Palace ★ 4.8 3,498 reviews
  2. 2 Salzburg: Best of Mozart Fortress Concert and Dinner ★ 4.5 1,424 reviews
  3. 3 Salzburg: Mozart Concert with Dinner ★ 4.8 835 reviews

Prague

The rooms were built for this sound.

Prague is a city of small, perfect rooms: the gilded Mirror Chapel of the Clementinum, baroque halls and church naves where a string quartet or an organ fills the space exactly as the architects intended. Vivaldi, Mozart and Bach played a few metres from your seat, plus a jazz club or two for after. An evening here feels less like attending a concert than being inside one.

More cities

More cities worth a night at the concert.

Rome for the great basilicas, Verona for opera in a Roman arena, Krakow and Warsaw for Chopin in his own country, Paris for the recital halls. The rest of the map, ready when you are.
